- Binder  

Substance that enables to bind or stick elements together.

     
- Binding medium  

Substance such as oil, resin or glue, which, when mixed to a pigment, gives to the paint its rigidity. It enables the pigment to stick to the surface once it is dry. Sennelier offers a comprehensive range of binding mediums for the various pictorial techniques.

     
- Drawing gum   Product conditioned in a jar and used to leave untouched certain parts of a canvas. May be applied with an old brush and removed by rubbing it after it is completely dry. The paint slips on it without leaving any colour on the surface.
     
- Encaustic painting   Painting method based on beeswax melting with resin and Turpentine.
     
- Fat Layer/Lean Layer   Layer of paint composed of a paint enriched with oil/diluted with petroleum.
     
- Fixative   Mixture diluted with resin in alcohol. It is used to fix drawings, pastels, charcoals.
     
- Grammage   Weight-to-height ratio of a paper (indicates the thickness).
     
- Highlights   Brush strokes of white or another light colour applied on dark areas of a painting or a drawing to give it more vividness.
     
- Linseed oil   Made from pressed linseeds, it is used for mixes.
     
- Médium(paste or liquid)   Enables to increase the unctuosity and the adherence on surfaces. It increases the resistance of the colour layer and results in a progressive drying process, without sinkage. Water, petroleum, oil, alcohol and solvents are some examples of mediums.
     
- Monochrome   Work of art produced in a single colour.
     
- Muller   Object made of marble or glass and cone-shaped. Used to bind pigments.Extra-fine, solid oil stick which dries and is used as oil paint. It may be used together with oil paint in what is called 'mixed media'.
     
- Oil stick   Extra-fine, solid oil stick which dries and is used as oil paint. It may be used together with oil paint in what is called 'mixed media'.
     
- Organic pigment   Insoluble colouring substance. It can be vegetable, mineral or organic. It is the basis of all paints and has the power to colour.
     
- Ox gall   Liquid which facilitates the grip of products on the surface and is used with watercolours.
     
- Painting carboard   Also called Canvas Board, it is a solid cardboard covered with a coated canvas.
     
- Painting varnish   Final varnish that exists in different formats: matte, shiny or satin. It protects paintings.
     
- Pan   Square or round conditioning, containing watercolour or solid oil.
     
- Petroleum   Used to dissolve oil and to wash the brushes. Not very siccative and odourless.
     
- Rabbitskin glue   Natural glue extracted from rabbit skin. May be applied for colour or backdrop making.
     
- Retouching varnish   Used for restoration. It brightens up colours and prepares the old paint layer for a new layer of paint.
     
- Roller pressing   Pasting of a canvas, either painted or not, on a hard surface (board, wall, ceiling).
     
- Siccative   Metallic components in solution in a solvent. A siccative accelerates the drying process of oil paint (top layer and underneath).
     
- Solvent   Liquid used to dissolve or fluidify other substances (water, petroleum, acetone, methylated spirits.).
     
- Surface with grain   Surface on which the texture, the relief, shows..
     
- Thinner   Liquid that enables to diminish the thickness of a material. Thinners include water, petroleum, solvents.
     
- Tint   Flat, unified shade with regular density on all its surface.
     
- Tonking   Pictorial device enabling to lighten a wet painting that is too ornamented, by dabbing it and absorbing it.
     
- Turpentime   Generic name of semi-liquid resins. Sennelier turpentine is made out from distilled resin from the pine tree. It is used to dilute oil paint and to wash brushes.
     
- Universal ,gesso   These are mixtures based on acrylic resins and various whites; which give an indelible film and may be applied on numerous surfaces. They enable the paint layer to stick well to the canvas.
     
- Vellum   Ancient name referring to the fineness of the paper.
     
- Watercolour or Gouache   Gives a shiny protection layer.
